Wall Walk - The complete guide

The wall walk builds the combined strength, balance and confidence needed for a freestanding handstand - you walk your feet up a wall from a plank position into a wall handstand.

    How to perform it

    1. 1Start in a plank position with your feet against a wall
    2. 2Walk your feet up the wall while your hands simultaneously walk backward toward the wall
    3. 3Continue until your body is vertical and your chest faces the wall
    4. 4Hold briefly at the top with active shoulders
    5. 5Walk back down the same way, under control, to a plank position

    Common mistakes

⚠️ Moving too fast without control through the transitions
⚠️ Hands ending up too close to the wall, pushing the shoulders into an awkward angle
⚠️ Skipping shoulder and wrist warm-up before attempting it

Progression - the path to mastering it

    1. Solid plank hold 60+ seconds
    2. Wall walk halfway up
    3. Wall walk 3/4 up
    4. Full wall walk to vertical
    5. Hold at the top 10+ seconds

    FAQ

How far from the wall should my hands end up?

A hand's width or two from the wall gives the best balance between stability and a genuinely vertical line - too close pushes the shoulders uncomfortably.

What strength should I have first?

Solid plank hold strength and basic shoulder stability from pike push-ups are a good foundation before starting to walk up the wall.
