Wall HSPU Negative - The complete guide
The wall HSPU negative is the most effective route to your first handstand push-up - you start in a handstand against the wall and put all your effort into the slow lowering phase.
How to perform it
- 1Kick up into a handstand against the wall, facing the wall or with your back to it depending on level
- 2Place your hands shoulder-width apart, slightly in front of your head
- 3Lower yourself slowly by bending your elbows, aiming for 5-8 seconds
- 4Let the crown of your head touch the floor lightly and under control
- 5Come out of the position under control, ideally walking down into a pike or using a spotter
Common mistakes
⚠️ Dropping uncontrolled through the last few centimeters
⚠️ Elbows flaring too wide instead of pointing backward
⚠️ Attempting it without solid pike push-up strength and handstand balance first
Progression - the path to mastering it
1. Solid pike push-up 3x10
2. Wall handstand, hold 30+ seconds
3. Wall HSPU negative in 3 seconds
4. Wall HSPU negative in 5-8 seconds
5. First full handstand push-up against the wall
FAQ
What handstand balance should I have first?
Be able to hold a wall handstand calmly for at least 30-45 seconds before focusing on the bending part of the movement.
Is it dangerous to lower onto the crown of my head?
Not if done slowly with active shoulders - avoid letting the neck bear the weight passively, and stop for sharp pain.
