Straddle Planche - The complete guide
The straddle planche spreads the legs wide to shorten the lever arm - a noticeably easier alternative to the full planche, but still one of calisthenics' hardest static holds.
How to perform it
- 1Start from a pseudo planche push-up position or tuck planche
- 2Extend your legs and spread them wide into a straddle
- 3Lift your hips until your body is horizontal, shoulders well past your hands
- 4Keep your arms straight and shoulders actively pushed forward
- 5Hold the position without your hips sagging toward the floor
Common mistakes
⚠️ Too narrow a straddle, keeping the load close to a full planche
⚠️ Shoulders fall back over the hands instead of staying forward
⚠️ Skipping the tuck planche foundation
Progression - the path to mastering it
1. Tuck planche 15-20 seconds
2. Advanced tuck planche
3. Straddle planche 3-5 seconds
4. Straddle planche 10+ seconds
5. Full planche
FAQ
How wide should the straddle be?
Wide enough to feel a clear reduction in load compared to legs together - most people use a near-full split width at first.
What wrist strength should I have?
Solid - the planche family is among the most wrist-demanding calisthenics exercises. Build the mobility and strength over months, not weeks.
