Skin the Cat - The complete guide
Skin the cat is a shoulder mobility and strength exercise where you rotate your whole body through the bar from a regular hang to an inverted position and back again.
How to perform it
- 1Hang with straight arms in an overhand grip
- 2Lift your legs and roll your hips up and back, tucking your knees to your chest
- 3Continue the rotation until your legs point down on the other side of the bar (inverted hang)
- 4Hold briefly in the inverted position with good shoulder control
- 5Rotate slowly back the same way to the starting position
Common mistakes
⚠️ Using swing and momentum instead of controlled rotation
⚠️ Forcing the movement without the shoulder mobility to support it
⚠️ Losing grip or control in the inverted position
Progression - the path to mastering it
1. Hanging knee raises
2. Tuck hold halfway through the rotation
3. Half skin the cat (to horizontal only)
4. Full skin the cat with a controlled return
5. Skin the cat to a German hang
FAQ
How much mobility does it require?
Good shoulder external rotation and flexibility - if your shoulders are tight, work on German hangs and active hanging mobility first.
Is it dangerous for the shoulders?
Only if you force it without mobility. Done slowly and under control, it actually builds shoulder health and prepares you for the back lever and other inverted skills.
