Ring Muscle-Up - The complete guide

The ring muscle-up is significantly harder than a bar muscle-up - the instability of the rings makes the transition from pull to press far more demanding for shoulder control and timing.

    How to perform it

    1. 1Take a false grip on both rings (wrist rotated over the top of the ring)
    2. 2Pull explosively while keeping the rings close to your body
    3. 3Bring your chest up high, at least to bar height, ideally higher
    4. 4Rotate quickly through the transition by turning your wrists and elbows over the rings
    5. 5Press up into a stable, ideally RTO, support position

    Common mistakes

⚠️ Attempting it without solid RTO support holds and ring dips first
⚠️ Losing the false grip during the pull, making the transition impossible
⚠️ The rings spread uncontrolled during the transition due to insufficient stability

Progression - the path to mastering it

    1. Muscle-up on a fixed bar
    2. RTO support hold 20+ seconds
    3. Ring dip 10+ reps
    4. Negative ring muscle-up from the top position
    5. Full ring muscle-up

    FAQ

Why is the ring muscle-up harder than the bar version?

The rings move freely throughout the transition, so you have to perform the technical rotation while simultaneously stabilizing two independently moving points.

What strength should I have first?

A solid bar muscle-up, 10+ strict ring dips, and a 20+ second RTO support hold are a realistic foundation before attempting the full movement.
