Knee Push-Up - The complete guide
The knee push-up moves the contact point from the toes to the knees, significantly reducing the load - a solid stepping stone between the incline push-up and the full push-up.
How to perform it
- 1Start in a push-up position, but let your knees rest on the floor
- 2Keep a straight line from knee to head - no break at the hip
- 3Lower your chest toward the floor with elbows at roughly a 45-degree angle
- 4Lightly touch the floor with your chest
- 5Press back up to straight arms without the hips rising first
Common mistakes
⚠️ Lifting the hips high at the bottom to make it easier (cheat reps)
⚠️ Only partial range of motion - not going all the way down
⚠️ Staying on the knees long after having the strength for a full push-up
Progression - the path to mastering it
1. Knee push-up with full ROM 3x8
2. Knee push-up 3x15
3. Mixed set: start on toes, finish on knees
4. Full push-up 1-3 reps from toes
5. 10+ strict push-ups from toes
FAQ
Is the knee push-up a bad exercise?
No, it's a completely legitimate progression - the only issue is staying on it forever instead of using it as a deliberate step toward the full push-up.
When should I switch to the toes?
When you can do 15+ clean knee push-ups with full range of motion - then try 1-3 reps from your toes and build from there.
