Human Flag - The complete guide
The human flag is one of calisthenics' most visually impressive skills - the body held horizontal to the side of a vertical pole, driven by shoulder, back and core strength.
How to perform it
- 1Grip with the top hand in an overhand grip
- 2Grip with the bottom hand in an underhand grip, pressed against the pole
- 3Pull your body in toward the pole with the top arm
- 4Lift your hips and legs to a horizontal line
- 5Hold the position straight or tucked
Common mistakes
⚠️ Too weak a grip, so the body slides down the pole
⚠️ Hips sagging below shoulder height
⚠️ Attempting the full variation too early without solid base strength in shoulders and core
Progression - the path to mastering it
1. Side plank hold
2. Vertical pull (pulling in toward the pole)
3. Tuck human flag 3-5 seconds
4. Advanced tuck human flag
5. Straddle or full human flag
FAQ
What base strength should I have first?
A solid side plank (30s+), good pull-ups and a strong core are a good foundation before attempting the tuck variation.
Why do I slide down the pole?
Typically too weak a grip or incorrect hand placement - train grip strength separately and make sure the bottom hand actively presses against the pole.
